This collection of essays had its origin in a conference, ‘Tyrants, Kings, Dynasts and Generals: Modes of Autocracy in the Classical Period’, held at Cardiff University in July 2003. I should like to thank all those who participated in the conference and made it both valuable and enjoyable. Thanks are especially due to Christopher Tuplin and Roger
