Ancient Tyranny. Edited by Sian Lewis
EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY PRESS
This collection of essays had its origin in a conference, ‘Tyrants, Kings, Dynasts and Generals: Modes of Autocracy in the Classical Period’, held at Cardiff University in July 2003. I should like to thank all those who participated in the conference and made it both valuable and enjoyable. Thanks are especially due to Christopher Tuplin and Roger
Brock, for both their contribution to the conference, and their encouragement of the original idea. The conference was generously supported by the British Academy, the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, the University of Wales Institute of Classics and Ancient History, and the School of History and Archaeology at Cardiff University. I would like to thank my colleagues in Ancient History at Cardiff, particularly Louis Rawlings and
Nick Fisher, for their support of the project, and the School of History and Archaeology’s Departmental Administrator, Elizabeth Walker, for her invaluable assistance in organising the conference and ensuring its smooth running. Finally, my thanks are due to Christopher Smith and John Davey, for smoothing the path to publication with Edinburgh University Press, and to James Dale for his support through the process of preparation.
