Amid the battles for production orders throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, a new manufacturer materialized. Airbus Industrie formed in the early 1970s with French, German, Spanish, and British partners. The goal of the European consortium widely focused on saving the historic and valuable aerospace industry within Europe. More importantly, the group aimed to capture a fifty-percent share of the lucrative jet transport market. This would eventually occur as the result of strong business sense and the ability to build world-class aircraft.
Through the early years, Airbus achieved short-term goals with the A300 and the later A310, both twin-jet wide-bodies. These aircraft were the first of their type, creating a new way of thinking and defining a new aircraft market. Boeing would follow suit with its 757 and 767 designs.
Profusely illustrated with 160 b/w photos in addition to four pages of color photography, Airbus A340 is a definitive introduction to one of the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft to date. Indeed, the Airbus A340 was the first aircraft to be completely designed on computer. One of the illustrated series that takes a technical look at airliners.
