The German Navy (Kriegsmarine) was the smallest of the three main Wehrmacht (Armed Forces) branches with which Germany went to war in 1939. The German Heer (Army) was the most powerful land force ever assembled, at least until the end of 1943. The Luftwaffe was a large, modem, and highly effective air force. They and the Army's Panzer (Armor) formations had driven the British off the European continent and forced the French into a humiliating surrender in six weeks during the Spring of 1940. By any estimation, these forces were among the finest in the world. On the other hand, the Kriegsnumne. was at least on paper - not in the same class as the world's great navies. The Americans. British, and Japanese all hail larger, more powerful navies. The Kriegsmarine rested uncomfortably in the second rank along with the French and Italian navies.
