The history of the Electorate of the Palatine, Kurpfalz, especially the military history, is hardly taken notice of today. This is probably due to the fact that the Palatine did not survive the eighteenth century as an independant power but was united with Bavaria in 1778 when the Elector Karl Theodor inherited Bavaria on the extinction of that line of the Wittelsbachs. This work is an effort to close that gap at least with regard to the War of the Spanish Succession.
It was scarcely to be imagined that it would be possible to add to Oscar Bezzel’s work “Geschichte des Kurpfälzischen Heeres” but amazingly many archive documents have survived the Second World War and were retrieved and examined by Claus-Peter Golberg. Thus the graphic designs for the grenadier caps of the troops in the service of the Maritime Powers came to light. In addition the study which he and Jean Belaubre made of the flags and standards captured by the French, the “Triomphes de Louis XIV”, helped to close a part of this gap. This version of the original German document does not include the details of the archive documents since these take up a lot of space and would not be interesting to most readers. Apart from that, a translation of the old German would itself tend to falsify the statements. The tables of unit strengths at various times have also been shortened. The available documents are incomplete and sometimes contradictory. While creating the plates of uniforms and equiptment we have attempted to reconstruct them according to the existing evidence but, in the end, a lot remains left to the reader’s own judgement.
