Designing a modern fighter is a difficult and complex business these days. What the aircraft needs is sufficient power to give it a high performance, sufficient size and strength to enable it to carry the fuel and weapons called for by the task it has to perform, and the best possible set of avionics to make sure it can locate its target, hit and destroy it, and survive to hit another target later. That's a tall order, but if cost is no object the technology is available and such an aircraft can be built. It's when the requirements get down to fine details that the fun starts: in the case of the F-14 most of this detail is tied in with the fact that the aircraft is a naval fighter, and a shipboard fleet air defence fighter at that.
