Hienz J. Nowarra's "German Helicopters 1928-1945" attempts to cover an often neglected aspect of German aircraft development before and during the Second World War. It is roughly chronological in order starting with the development of autogyros such as the FW C-19 and C-30 (themselves derived from Cierva designs), before moving on to pure German helicopters such as the Flettner Fl 185, Fw 61, and Fa 223. Much of the narrative in this book is unfortunately weak and can be found in other published books such as J.R. Smith and Antony L. Kay's "German Aircraft of the Second World War." The strength of Nowarra's book lies in the large numbers of photographs it possesses. Also thrown in are a few (relatively poor quality) three-view line drawings of those helicopters that made it to mass production status (namely the Fa 223, Fl 282, and Fa 330). The book concludes with technical data for all helicopters discussed. Finally, what is missing besides a strong narrative are color plates which would be useful for modelers.
