The logical outcome of a long line of classic biplanes built by Hawker Aircraft Limited, the Hurricane is assured a place in the Aviation Hall Of Fame as the first monoplane fighter to enter service with the Royal Air Force, and the first British fighter to exceed 300 mph in level flight. Rugged and reliable, it was numerically the most important aircraft in RAF inventory during the early years of World War II and went on to serve throughout the conflict in every combat theater.
The Hawker company was fortunate in having the brilliant talents of Sydney Camm, who had been appointed Chief Designer of the H G Hawker Engineering Company, the forerunner of Hawker Aircraft Limited, in 1925. That same year Camm designed a monoplane fighter and while it was not built, Camm, realizing that the biplane had reached its design zenith, continued to investigate the monoplane which he felt would bethe interceptor of the future. In 1933, under Camm's direction, the Hawker design team began work on a monoplane with informal design proposals being made to the Air Ministry in August of 1935. These proposals were basically a monoplane adaption of the very successful Hawker Fury biplane powered by a 660 hp Rolls-Royce Goshawk steam cooled engine and was known as the Fury Monoplane.
