The author is a soldier - who always wanted to be a sailor. For thirty-three years, he wrote a regular humour column under the pen name 'Sustainer' which appeared in The British Army Review, latterly The Officer, and for divers other military publications, both British and foreign. Collections of these articles have been published in three books.
This is his seventh book, but his first foray into naval history. He was inspired to write this history as he can see the Isle of May and the 'battlefield' from his home in North Berwick.
