Ever since that long ago day when man discovered the wheel, all forms of transportation fascinated him. It meant he had found the means not only to move to far-off places, but even to dream beyond the horizon, and then move to those distant vistas. Perhaps no form of transportation has held more attraction for him, and in fact still does, than the "iron horse." There is good reason for this, for even the most primitive locomotive was a symbol of man using other than his own muscles or animal power to move him from place to place. Psychologically, the very act, in those early days, of converting wood into steam power was actually one of the first major steps in the conquering of nature by man; of converting a stout tree, perhaps even a dead one at that, into live steam.
