The Arab-Israeli Wars: Tank Battles in the Mideast, 1956-73

The Arab-Israeli Wars - Tank Battles in the Mideast, 1956-73.This early Avalon Hill award winning game was one in a series of popular tactical level games that followed on the heels of the earlier extremely popular tactical games, Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader. The game, released in 1977, simulates at the company, platoon, or individual squad level the many actions involving the Israelis and the Arab states which faced off in the 1956, 1967 and 1973 wars. This game, in fact, was one of the first to distill some of the then recent actions of the 1973 war into boardgame simulations. Many of the most significant actions of those wars are simulated at the battalion or regimental level. The game contains 24 individual scenarios. It uses a system of increasing complexity whereby the rules and matching scenarios progress from a basic, to standard, then to an advanced level with even more optional rules to add detail (and more playing time) to the games. The scenario titles, Bir Gifgafa, Rafid, Botzer, Jenin, Ras Seedar, Mazrat Beit Jan, El Firdan, Kuneitra, Chinese Farm, Shovach Yonim, and Deservoir, among others, are familiar to students of these Middle Eastern battles. The game is a very interesting simulation for both sides as the tactical commander has to employ his weapons and units skillfully and tactically correct in order to defeat the enemy. The battles are evenly matched, feature the key and revolutionary weapons, such as the Sagger and Sapper missiles, whose capabilities shocked the Israelis, and most scenarios can be completed rapidly. Both sides have a fair chance to accomplish specified victory conditions and are usually in the game to the last turn. While the game can be learned quickly, to master all its details puts you in the minds of the real tactical commanders who had to react instantly to a rapidly changing environment. The game is in punched but good condition throughout. The counters are segregated by contingent in envelopes (see photos). The box is also in good condition showing wear consistent with its age. The game can easily be played solitaire but is designed for play by two players. This is a must game for the veteran or the novice wargamer. It makes for fun action that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
