It was about a hundred years ago that the Confederate soldier marched to the end of his hallowed road, leaving behind on the forsaken fields a gun here, a sword there, fragments of the past, to remind us of his devotion to duty and to the land he loved. These tools of war are not common or ordinary equipment, and for good reason. Because of the lack of steel, the Southern soldier's gun barrel was made of iron. Due to the scarceness of iron, his gun frame was made of brass. And so it was—on down the line. The hard-pressed Confederate Ordnance Bureau substituted whatever materials it could secure for the "impossible" in order to obtain some metal for their production of guns, swords, canteens, cannon, ammunition and the countless other items needed to keep their army in the field.
