Detail & Scale series are designed primarily for modelers to give them the up close and personal looks at the engine, cockpit, wheel wheels, structure, weapons and structure of the plane. The photos are top notch. There are line drawings and some text to give the reader a background of the plane under review and the past few pages give reviews on some of the model planes on the market. With the internet, those pages mean less since a quick search will give you dozens of reviews.
This book is the P-51 Mustang (part 1) prototype through P-51 C, so you get very good review/coverage of the plane as designed and used initially as the A-36 Apache ground attack plane. Excellent results with the plane up to altitude up to 15,000 feet led to experiments with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine and the Mustang D gained infamy escorting B-17's into Europe.
One downside to these books - the photos are small. 8 pages of color, 5 view line drawings, excellent captions make up for that. If you want a true photo essay, try the Walk Around Series (I do not work for Squadron, I promise). This, coupled with the fact it only covers Models A thru C, lead it to four stars.
This book complements the more expensive and extensive histories of the Mustang such as the ones by authors Paul A Ludwig or Malcolm Lowe. For modelers, I'd recommend this book over the Warbird tech series (I have that, too, it's good but not so much for modelers). Any fan of the P-51 is going to love seeing this plane as it was first built, an excellent design, exceeded all expectations and when it was given a more powerful engine, a war winner.
