U.S. armored units took part in all the major campaigns in the battles for France U.S. tank operations in France involved two types of formations. The armored divisions were intended primarily for mobile operations, and their principal role was to exploit deep behind enemy lines once a penetration had been won by the infantry. Of the sixteen armored divisions raised in WWII, all but one served in the European Theater of Operations. The separate tank battalions were formed to provide support to the infantry.
