Hammer and Sickle is a Army handbook for the Flames of War game system. To play the game you need the core rules, minatures and a gaming board. Flames of War IMO is the best minature wargame today, well supported and set in World War 2.
Hammer and Sickle is set in the breakout stage of Operation Bagration, the huge Soviet Offensive that destroyed German Army group Centre. The Soviets have broken through the thin line of defenders and now rush in their armour to encircle the hapless Germans. This book is a must for any Soviet Commander for within are the Soviet Armoured Army lists. Full battalions of T-34s including the upgraded T-34/85 powerfull enough to engage even the Tiger. There are variants to this list, reglular Red Army, Guards and Mechanised Infantry again with armoured support. Soviet Armour plays differently from any other nation and makes for a very tempting force.
On the German side things have gone steadily worse yet there are still veteran soldiers available that can stem the tide for long enough for the German High Command to send in much needed reinforcements and make the Soviets pay dear for every meter they reconquer.
On the whole I find that Hammer and Sickle is among the best army books, Bagration provides a fascinating background and the army lists are superb, the Soviet Armoured forces are the Iron Fist of their Army and have access to all the best equipment while the defending Germans are frankly a little less tempting but still a colourful force and for anyone who favors the movie Iron Cross then this is Steiner's force.
