When one thinks of decoys, duck and goose hunting readily comes to mind. But decoys can also lure other birds to the gun—for example, doves and crows. Both species are gregarious, that is, they like to feed, roost, and travel in the company of their kind. Consequently, the hunter who sets out a spread of counterfeit doves or crows is almost guaranteed to enjoy far more shooting action than the hunter who simply plunks himself down somewhere in the hope of birds obligingly coming within range. One drawback to using dove and crow decoys, however, is that commercially manufactured models cost anywhere from $5 to $10 each. Therefore, setting out at least a dozen decoys, which is necessary to achieve the best results, can cost a bundle.
